Canada’s Tech Talent Strategy, introduced in June 2023, is designed to position the country as a global leader in attracting skilled tech professionals. This comprehensive approach includes several key initiatives aimed at bolstering Canada’s tech industry:
Innovation Stream under the International Mobility Program (IMP): A new stream is being developed to facilitate the entry of highly talented individuals, supporting high-growth employers and advancing Canada’s innovation priorities.
Open Work Permits for H-1B Visa Holders: Recognizing challenges faced by H-1B visa holders in the U.S., Canada introduced a dedicated work permit stream allowing up to 10,000 H-1B visa holders to obtain a three-year open work permit.
Attracting Digital Nomads: Canada is welcoming digital nomads—individuals who can perform their jobs remotely from anywhere in the world. These professionals can reside in Canada for up to six months without requiring a work permit.
Enhancements to the Start-Up Visa Program: Improvements include increasing the duration of work permits from one to three years and offering open work permits, providing greater flexibility for entrepreneurs to develop their businesses in Canada.
These initiatives underscore Canada’s commitment to fostering a robust tech ecosystem by attracting top global talent and supporting innovation-driven economic growth.
